Leachate from landfill sites severely impacts surface environments, groundwater, and downstream drinking water populations, making it one of the major pollution sources. Therefore, the use of HDPE liner membranes in wastewater treatment ponds has become a trend.

In most cases, the base of a sewage pond is constructed from reinforced concrete and cement, thus only debris such as rebar ends, bricks, and stones that can puncture the waterproof membrane need to be cleared. If the bottom of the pond is irregular, the corners should be smoothly rounded when laying the membrane, and if columns are present, the membrane should be cut into an arc to tightly wrap around them. The installation of the waterproof membrane requires temperatures above 5 degrees Celsius. According to the principle of thermal expansion and contraction of the membrane, it should be tighter in cooler temperatures and looser in warmer temperatures. It is not advisable to lay geomembrane in winds exceeding 4 levels. If construction is necessary in conditions of winds above 4 levels or during rain or snow, the laid and unwelded waterproof membrane should be securely fastened with large stones or sandbags. To save materials and reduce costs when laying the membrane in a sewage pond, it is best to minimize welding joints. In landfill projects, if there is a steep slope greater than 1 to 6, avoid welding joints within 1.5 meters of the top of the slope or areas of stress concentration.

Long-term exposure to sunlight, washing, and corrosion can lead to cracking and damage in traditional concrete and earthen pond wastewater treatment structures, causing leaks and seepage that can contaminate groundwater and the drinking water of surrounding communities. HDPE waterproofing membranes offer excellent waterproofing performance, good chemical stability, resistance to aging and ultraviolet rays, and protection against rodent chewing and microbial attacks. Additionally, they are easy to install, save labor, and reduce construction time, potentially cutting costs by up to 50%. Therefore, HDPE waterproofing membranes play an indispensable role in wastewater treatment ponds, with immense power.
