What is Mercerization? Mercerization is a simple and widespread finishing process for pure cotton fabrics. Cotton products (yarn, fabric) are treated with a concentrated solution of caustic soda under tension, and then the caustic soda is washed out under tension, which is known as mercerization. Microscopically, the mercerization process makes the cotton fiber diameter increase and become round, changing the longitudinal natural twist rate (80% → 14.5%), transforming the cross-section from kidney-shaped to elliptical, even round, and shrinking the lumen to a point. If appropriate tension is applied, the fiber roundness increases, the original surface皱纹 disappear, and the surface smoothness and optical properties are improved (the reflection of light changes from diffuse reflection to more directional reflection), increasing the intensity of the reflected light, making the fabric appear with a luster like silk, which is why this process is called mercerization.
