The establishment of the organic cotton and textile system has been accompanied by numerous standards. Currently, the two most widely recognized in the industry are the GOTS certification, commonly known as the Full Organic Standard, established by the Germans, and the OCS certification, known as the Semi-Organic Standard, established by the Americans.
Overall, the standards for organic cotton generally include the following requirements.
Seeds. Must not be genetically modified. This is a strict requirement.
2. Land. It is inspected every two years, and must not contain any pesticide or heavy metal residues. If the agricultural residue test fails, no applications will be accepted for five years. Generally, land that has been used for other crops in the past requires a three-year transition period to completely eliminate residues and harmful substances.
3. Water. Irrigation water must be tested annually and meet the national second-class drinking water standards.
4. Cotton and subsequent processing production must prevent harmful chemicals such as benzene and formaldehyde from entering.
5. Prohibit forced labor and the use of child labor. Additionally, businesses must assume social responsibilities and protect the environment.
Wop Co. has a special organic cotton customer, China's Steadfast Group (parent company of Full Cotton Times). They have higher requirements for the production of napkins made from organic cotton, specifically, the dioxin content must not exceed the limit.
Many international certification bodies are involved in the testing and certification process, but since a major fraud incident at a testing facility in a certain country a few years ago, the Western market has imposed stricter management on certifications. This is also a primary reason for the global organic cotton production dropping from 200,000 tons in 2018 to around 100,000 tons today.
