Due to raw material differences, polylactic acid (PLA) comes in three forms: poly d-lactic acid (PDLA), poly L-lactic acid (PLLA), and poly dL-lactic acid (PDLLA). PLLA is generally used for fiber production. The spinning of PLA and its copolymers can be done through solution spinning and melt spinning processes, with dry spinning and thermal drawing being the primary methods, as dry spun fibers have superior mechanical properties over melt spun fibers. Studies show that the molecular weight and distribution of PLA, the composition and concentration of the spinning solution, stretching temperature, the crystallinity of PLA, and the fiber diameter all affect fiber performance. Reaction extrusion spinning can also be used to produce PLA fibers. PLA fibers produced by dry spinning using dichloromethane, trichloromethane, and toluene as solvents have fewer thermal degradations and higher fiber strength. However, due to the toxicity of solvents, harsh spinning environments, and difficulties in solvent recovery, special treatment is required, leading to high production costs and limiting the industrial production of PLA fibers. PLA is a thermoplastic resin, and theoretically, melt spinning is the ideal method for fiber formation. Melt spinning technology is mature, has minimal environmental impact, and is cost-effective, making it more conducive to automation and flexible production, and is the primary method for forming PLA fibers. However, melt spinning can cause hydrolysis and thermal degradation of PLA, so the moisture content of the resin must be strictly controlled before spinning to ensure process stability and fiber quality. During melt spinning, using a PLA with a molecular weight of 330,000, first perform true drying, then melt spinning to obtain PLA fibers. The specific steps include melt spinning and thermal drawing. Melt spinning: The polymer is melted and extruded through a screw under nitrogen protection, and the fibers are then wound at a speed of 118~210 km/min. Thermal drawing spinning: The primary fibers are stretched in a double-zone on a 160℃ hot plate.
