Billions of Romance! Chinese Scientists Develop Pink Cotton
Cotton textile processing requires a significant amount of chemical dyes, which pollute the environment and affect health. Creating various types of colored cotton fibers through genetic engineering can effectively reduce the use of chemical dyes. The existing colored cotton primarily includes brown and green varieties, which are relatively monochromatic and fail to meet the diverse needs of people's colorful lives.The research first optimized three key genes related to betalain synthesis through codon optimization, and obtained new cotton materials rich in betalains using the cotton variety "Zhongmianso 49" as the recipient. Under the control of a constitutive promoter, both cotton fibers and other tissues exhibit a pink phenotype. With a fiber-specific promoter, only the cotton fibers appear pink. The content of betalains in mature fibers decreases with the lysis of vacuoles, resulting in a lighter color. The next step for researchers will be to further investigate the mechanism of betalain deposition that does not fade. This study is the first to introduce betalains into cotton and achieve stable expression, marking an initial exploration in synthetic biology research using cotton as a chassis organism.
