The establishment of the organic cotton and textile system has been accompanied by the formulation of many standards. Currently, the two most widely recognized in the industry are the GOTS certification, commonly known as the Full Organic Standard, established by the Germans, and the OCS certification, commonly referred to as the Semi-Organic Standard, established by the Americans.
Overall, the standards for organic cotton typically include the following requirements.
Seeds. They must not be genetically modified. This is a strict requirement.
2. Land. It is inspected every two years, and must not contain any agricultural residues or heavy metal residues. If the agricultural residue test fails, no application is allowed for five years. Generally speaking, land that has been used for other crops in the past requires a three-year transition period to completely eliminate agricultural residues and harmful substances.
3. Water: Irrigation water must be tested annually to meet the national drinking water standard for Class II.
4. Cotton and subsequent processing production must prevent harmful chemicals such as benzene and formaldehyde from entering.
5. Prohibit forced labor and the use of child labor. Other requirements include businesses taking social responsibility and protecting the environment.

Many international certification bodies are involved in the testing and certification of this aspect, but since a serious fraud incident at a certain country's testing agency a few years ago, the Western market has implemented stricter management over certifications. This is also a major reason why the global organic cotton production has decreased from 200,000 tons in 2018 to around 100,000 tons currently.
