Scorching is a process that involves rapidly passing fabric through the flames of a scorching machine or over a hot metal surface to remove the nap from the fabric surface, achieving a smooth finish. The nap on the fabric surface, being close to the flame and in a loose state, burns quickly. The fabric itself, being denser and thicker, and further from the flame, heats up more slowly and is removed from the flame or hot metal surface before reaching its ignition point. This principle, which takes advantage of the different rates of temperature increase in the fabric and nap, ensures that only the surface nap is burned without damaging the fabric. During scorching, the temperature varies depending on the fiber material, so it's essential to understand the thermal properties of different fiber types.
