Rayon, also known as viscose fiber, is a major variety of man-made fibers. It is produced from natural cellulose through alkalization to form alkali cellulose, which then reacts with CO2 to generate cellulose xanthate. This xanthate dissolves in dilute alkali to form a thick, sticky solution known as viscose. After wet spinning and a series of processing steps, this viscose becomes rayon fiber. Its basic composition is (C6H10O5)n. The cross-section of common rayon fibers has a sawtooth-shaped skin-core structure, with longitudinal grooves. In contrast, high-viscose fibers lack a skin-core structure and have a circular cross-section.
Viscose fibers have good moisture absorption properties. Under normal atmospheric conditions, the moisture regain is around 13%. After absorbing moisture, they significantly expand, with the diameter increasing up to 50%. This is why fabrics feel stiff after being soaked and have a high shrinkage rate.Regular viscose fibers have lower breaking strength compared to cotton, approximately 1.6~2.7 cN/dtex; their elongation at break is greater than cotton, ranging from 16%~22%. The wet strength is significantly reduced, dropping to about 50% of the dry strength, with an increase of about 50% in elongation when wet. Their modulus is lower than cotton, making them prone to deformation under low loads and poor in elasticity recovery, leading to easy elongation and poor dimensional stability. The strength, particularly wet strength, of reinforced viscose is higher than that of regular viscose, with less elongation at break and good dimensional stability. Regular viscose has poor wear resistance, whereas the reinforced variety shows an improvement.Viscose fibers have a chemical composition similar to cotton, making them more alkali-resistant but less acid-resistant than cotton. However, their alkali and acid resistance are both inferior to cotton. Rich fibers, on the other hand, exhibit good alkali and acid resistance. Similarly, the dyeing properties of viscose fibers are similar to cotton, with a full color spectrum and good dyeing performance. Additionally, the thermal properties of viscose fibers are also similar to cotton, with a density close to cotton at 1.50~1.52g/cm³.Regular viscose fibers have good moisture absorption, are easy to dye, resist static electricity well, and possess excellent spinnability. Short fibers can be spun alone or blended with other textile fibers, resulting in fabrics that are soft, smooth, breathable, comfortable to wear, and with vibrant colors and good colorfastness after dyeing. They are suitable for making内衣, outerwear, and various decorative items. The yarns of long fibers are lightweight and thin, suitable not only for clothing but also for making bedspreads and decorative fabrics. The drawbacks of this type of viscose fiber include lower tensile strength, lower wet modulus, higher shrinkage rate, and a tendency to deform easily, with poor elasticity and abrasion resistance.
