Steam yarn technology is applied in wool and wool-cotton blended spinning processes to address issues such as fabric instability and static electricity. As the textile industry evolves, the steam yarn process has expanded to include cotton, hemp, and synthetic fibers.
The steaming process.
Preheat the fuselage
During the steam reeling process, water droplet spots on the yarn are a common defect, which can cause issues with dyeing and other subsequent processes. Therefore, the steam reeling preheating process is essential, especially for worsted yarn.
Vacuum-sealing
Lower the boiling point of water to produce the required low-temperature saturated steam.
Heating
The low-temperature saturated steam is渗入到conical tube yarn. Each production process (spinning, twisting, weaving, etc.) induces tension effects on yarn and fibers, which can lead to yarn entanglement. The stress relaxation in the molecular structure of artificial fibers causes shrinkage. Tension and entanglement can cause issues in subsequent processes.
Insulation
The transition from vacuum to low-temperature saturated steam state ensures the entire spool of yarn, including packaging materials, is fully processed. The moisture from the cold steam is transferred to the yarn, resulting in uniform moisture distribution, consistent yarn strength and friction values. Additionally, the heat treatment also relaxes the twist.
During the yarn production process, the moisture in the fibers continuously evaporates, resulting in a cumulative reduction in humidity of over 4% from raw materials to the bobbins. Different spinning mills have varying yarn moisture indices; increasing machine speed leads to significant weight (moisture) loss. High temperatures and friction within the machine also evaporate moisture within the yarn, degrade its quality, and are detrimental to subsequent processing stages.

Moisture conditioning (steaming) of yarns takes place after winding and before storage, and is preferable before delivery if the storage time is extended. Proper packaging during transportation, such as tightly sealed wrapping with yarn cones or bobbins, helps maintain yarn moisture. Moreover, moisture conditioning before use can also benefit knitting and weaving. Research on weaving demand and supply indicates that yarns treated with moisture are superior to those without (dry yarns). When moistened yarns are used for weft weaving, the number of stops in the loom is significantly reduced, and the yarn strength and elongation at break are improved, with fewer fly ends, leading to a 2% increase in weaving efficiency. In knitting, a noticeable reduction in fly yarn can be observed.
In trade, buyers never accept extra surcharges; an increase in yarn weight directly translates to profit. The payback period for investment in yarn humidification equipment is typically less than a year, and for cotton yarn, even shorter, less than six months. Moreover, the export trade's demand for quality necessitates a continuous improvement in yarn quality. Consequently, yarn humidification has become an essential part of modern textile processing, compensating for yarn weight loss and enhancing yarn quality.
