How to memorize a guitar solo and play it by heart?

Many performers bring sheet music on stage, yet they still rely on their memory. Therefore, for a guitar learner, it's crucial to memorize some pieces, and one should not believe the notion that just holding the sheet music allows for beautiful playing. If one has a strong sight-reading ability, it's possible to play a piece fluently in one go, but complete mastery is not achievable.

Detailed performance includes nuances such as expression, intensity, tempo, rests, and harmonic progression, and involves one's own secondary creation. If one needs to rely on sheet music to attend to these elements, it can only be described as "unskilled." Just like public speaking, a speech that can't do without notes will never be captivating. When performing a piece of music, if one can play it completely from memory, they can fully immerse themselves in the performance, reaching its pinnacle. Conversely, if one needs to refer to the score during performance, it's inevitable that their attention will be divided, affecting the overall execution of the piece. Memorizing music doesn't have any special methods or tricks; it's hard to say exactly how one memorizes it. However, first and foremost, don't memorize the sheet music like a student memorizes a textbook.

When it comes to technique, I believe it's important to pay attention to the following three points: 1. Special care should be given to the points where there are pauses, prolongations, long rests, and long sustain notes before restarting, especially to the weak beginnings. 2. Similarities, such as the recapitulation of a sonata, often resemble the beginning but with differences; remember what those differences are, etc. 3. The transitions in tonality, rhythm, meter, stress positions, and some temporary changes in pitch, as well as special harmonic progressions, etc.

Changes primarily come from several aspects: 1. Harmony arrangement. 2. Texture structure. 3. Melodic embellishment or extension. 4. Rhythm changes. 5. Transposition. 6. Arrangement of emotional positions. Summarize to aid memory. Mixing up is possible, try not to, but if you do during performance, go with the flow. Note: Do not stop.

If unsure about the duration of infinite rests, long rests, or long ties, here's a method: Maintain them, mentally counting the beats at the original tempo, until you feel it's approximately right, ending on even beats...This approach may sacrifice accuracy, but generally, it won't be uncomfortable.
