Most guitar learners are unaware that they should first play like this when they get a six-string tablature. Knowledge boost!
Tactic One: Start with the main melody
The main melody, akin to a thread, weaves together a solo piano piece into a beautiful and melodious composition. Therefore, before obtaining a pre-composed six-line staff, one must identify the main melody notes, their positions, and what type of notes they are.The note value, whether it's quarter notes, eighth notes, or sixteenth notes, indicates the length of the sound. This piece is like constructing a house; you first build the entire framework. Otherwise, if you just play note by note from the staff without understanding the structure, it's like drinking plain water.
Tip Two: Reinforce the strong beat
Once familiar with the pitch and duration of the main melody notes, the next step is to identify which notes fall on the strong beats, which on the off-beats, and which on the weak beats. This way, the force with which the right hand plucks the strings varies, creating a sense of起伏 (rise and fall), expressing different emotions and sentiments.
Tip Three: Keyboarding Skills Are Crucial
Now, many six-line staffs online or in books fail to indicate fingerings. As beginners, one can only play a piece by imagination. In reality, proper fingerings are crucial for playing a piece well, whether it's folk fingerpicking or classical music. If you master the fingerings, you can play a piece smoothly. Without clear fingerings, there might be drag or disjoints in the music, making the rhythm sound chaotic. Therefore, having fingering markings or video guidance would be beneficial. Otherwise, observing how experts play, noting which notes are changed with which fingers, can greatly enhance your efficiency.
