What's the difference between an electric guitar and an acoustic guitar? Is it just the appearance?
The common Spanish guitar is further divided into classical and folk guitars, also known as singing guitars. The difference between the two lies in the strings used: classical guitars employ nylon strings, which have been available for over 200 years.
Classical guitars cannot be worn with a strap, and the primary playing position is seated. One method involves crossing your legs, placing the guitar on your right thigh. Another involves placing a small stool under your left foot, with the guitar resting on your left leg.
The classical guitar, primarily played with the fingertips, is mostly used for solo performances. Its sound is soft and mellow, making it ideal for playing rhythmic and melodic pieces, as well as solos. Its repertoire ranges from simple to complex, including pieces like "Love's Romance," "Dripping," "Moonlight," "The Recollections of the Alhambra," and "The Magic Flute." In fact, today, the classical guitar has expanded beyond classical music, now widely used in pop, jazz, and even symphonic compositions.
The folk guitar, as the name implies, is primarily designed for folk accompaniment. Its playing style can be with fingernails or a pick. It features steel strings, offering a bright tone and good graininess, suitable for single notes and solo arpeggios, and more appropriate for strumming and fingerpicking styles. The guitars commonly found in the market today are all of this type. Due to the steel strings of the folk guitar, many of these guitars on the market are equipped with an accessory called a "pickup." This component converts the mechanical vibration signals of the guitar into electrical signals, which are then amplified through PA equipment.
Due to the fact that folk guitars can be worn with a strap, the playing style is quite relaxed, allowing for either a seated or standing position.
