Pros and Cons of Capacitive Touch Screens

Many electronic products surround us, mainly because they facilitate our daily lives, thus leading to the widespread use of touchscreens. Before using electronic devices, it's crucial to understand their performance capabilities and gather comprehensive information to avoid issues during use. According to my research, the advantages of capacitive touchscreens over traditional resistive touchscreens include several key aspects:
1. Innovative Operation: Capacitive touchscreens support multi-touch functionality, making the operation more intuitive and enjoyable.
2. Non-accidental touch. Capacitive touchscreens require the detection of human body current to operate, meaning only the human body can interact with them. Other objects will not trigger a response, thus minimizing the possibility of accidental touches.
3. Higher durability. Capacitive touchscreens demonstrate superior performance in terms of dust resistance, water resistance, and wear resistance compared to resistive touchscreens.
As the currently trending touch screen technology, capacitive touch screens, despite their advantages such as a luxurious interface, multi-touch capabilities, and sensitivity only to human touch, also have several drawbacks:
1. Inaccuracy: Due to skill limitations, capacitive touchscreens lack the precision of resistive touchscreens. Moreover, they can only be used with fingers, making it challenging to recognize complex handwritten inputs on small screens.
2. Prone to environmental influence. Changes in environmental factors such as temperature and humidity can also cause instability or drift in capacitive touchscreens. For instance, when a user gets close to the screen while in use, it may cause drift, and even operating in crowded spaces can lead to drift. This is primarily due to the working principle of the capacitive touch screen technology. Although the user's fingers are closer to the screen, the presence of many larger-volume electric fields in the vicinity can affect the judgment of the touch location.
3. The cost is relatively high. Additionally, there were certain technical challenges during the process of attaching the capacitive touch screen to the LCD panel, resulting in a low yield. This inadvertently increased the cost of the capacitive touch screen.
