Since this membrane retains about 95% of molecules with a size of approximately 1 nanometer during the permeation process, it is named nanofiltration. Thanks to the superior characteristics of nanofiltration separation technology, it shows great potential applications in fields such as water treatment, biochemical engineering, and food industry. One significant feature of nanofiltration membranes is that they carry a charge, which is a key reason why they maintain high desalination performance at low pressures and can remove inorganic salts from membranes with molecular weight cut-offs in the hundreds.

Working Principle

Nanofiltration (NF), abbreviated, is a pressure-driven membrane separation process that lies between reverse osmosis (RO) and ultrafiltration. The pore size range of nanofiltration membranes is around several nanometers. Most nanofiltration membranes are derived from reverse osmosis membranes, such as CA, CTA membranes, aromatic polyamide composite membranes, and sulfonated polyether sulfone membranes, etc. However, compared to reverse osmosis, its operating pressure is lower, hence nanofiltration is also referred to as "Low-Pressure RO" or "Loose RO."
