In the manufacturing of both commercial and military space shuttles, thousands upon thousands of fasteners are used to join the aluminum panels together. Fatigue cracks on the lower aluminum sheets are often concealed by the first layer of skin. To ensure the integrity of any space shuttle, these hidden defects must be detected and repaired during regular in-service inspections.

Olympus has developed an innovative technology for detecting fasteners and near-surface cracks, as part of a series of aerospace solutions. This solution applies eddy current technology to an uncharted field. The new technology can clearly display images of cracks beneath the first layer of aluminum skin on aircraft, effectively providing reliable detection results for users.
