Insulators are categorized based on their installation methods, including suspended insulators and pole insulators; they are also differentiated by the insulation material used, such as porcelain, glass, and composite (also known as synthetic) insulators; voltage ratings, with low-voltage and high-voltage insulators; environmental conditions, leading to pollution-resistant insulators for dirty areas; and voltage types, resulting in DC insulators. There are also various special-purpose insulators, such as insulating crossarms, semiconductor glaze insulators, tension insulators for distribution, reel insulators, and wiring insulators, among others. Additionally, they can be divided into two types based on the possibility of insulation breakdown: Type A, non-breakdown insulators, and Type B, breakdown-prone insulators.
