Difference between 316 and 316L Stainless Steel Pipes

316 Stainless Steel:

316 stainless steel, with added molybdenum, boasts exceptional corrosion resistance, atmospheric corrosion resistance, and high-temperature strength, making it suitable for use under severe conditions; it also exhibits excellent work-hardening properties (non-magnetic).

Scope of Application: Equipment used in sea water, chemicals, dyes, papermaking, oxalic acid, fertilizers, and other production facilities; photographic, food industry, coastal area facilities, ropes, CD poles, bolts, nuts.

316L stainless steel (L for low carbon):

The low-carbon series of 316 steel, in addition to sharing the same properties as 316 steel, boasts superior intergranular corrosion resistance.

Application Scope: Products with specific requirements for combating grain boundary corrosion.

The Difference Between 316 and 316L Stainless Steel Tubing

316 and 316L stainless steels are molybdenum-containing grades. The molybdenum content in 316L stainless is slightly higher than in 316 stainless. Due to the molybdenum in the steel, this grade offers superior overall performance compared to 310 and 304 stainless steels. 316 stainless is widely used and boasts excellent chloride corrosion resistance, making it ideal for marine environments. 316L, as the low-carbon series of the 316 grade, is suitable for applications where post-weld annealing is not possible and corrosion resistance is required.
