Wulumuqi Hot Spring Design: A Revolution in the Emotional Value of Hot Spring Design

    2026-01-19

As the fatigue of city dwellers spreads from their bodies to their spirits, hot springs are no longer just a seasonal choice for "taking a dip when it's cold," but an essential vessel for healing emotions and seeking a sense of belonging. As practitioners deeply rooted in the hot spring design field, we have keenly noticed that the core competitive edge of hot spring projects has shifted from "hardware opulence" to "emotional resonance." A design revolution, from "functional satisfaction" to "emotional nourishment," is reshaping the fundamental logic of the entire industry.

In the past, many hot spring projects fell into the homogeneous trap of being "one out of a thousand"—simply piling up types of hot pools and upgrading the quality of interior materials, but overlooking the tourists' truest desires: here, they yearn to escape the high pressure of the workplace and the trivialities of life, to enjoy a period of relaxation that allows them to converse with themselves. Today, our starting point for design thinking is no longer "how many hot pools to build," but "how to accurately cater to and heal the tourists' emotions through spatial design."

The Heart of Emotional Design: Crafting Healing Spaces with a "Storytelling" Touch

A truly heartwarming hot spring space must be "full of warmth and stories." This sense of storytelling is not a deliberately concocted trick, but rather stems from a deep exploration of local culture and respect for the natural texture, allowing visitors to release and settle their emotions through immersion.

In the design of our hot spring project, we didn't merely replicate the symbolic elements of Japanese hot springs. Instead, we seamlessly integrated the "change with each step" concept from the Jiangnan gardens with the minimalist "negative space" of Japanese Zen. Utilizing the natural stream and bamboo groves on the site, we crafted a winding path connecting multiple private hot tubs. Bamboo fences and stone screens serve as semi-open partitions, ensuring privacy while allowing natural light and sounds to filter through. At night, the light from wooden lattice windows dances across the pool's surface, complemented by the distant sound of Suzhou pingtan singing, immersing visitors in a poetic scene reminiscent of "the mid-night bell echoing to the guest boat," naturally alleviating any anxiety. This design, which transforms local culture into a tangible spatial experience, resonates emotionally far more than mere luxury decoration.

Three Emotional Design Principles to Break the Homogenization Dilemma

Rule One: A Synergy of the Five Senses, Creating an Immersive Emotional Envelope

Perception of emotions is multi-dimensional; a single visual impact is hard to create a lasting memory point. In our design, we always adhere to the concept of "five senses synergy," allowing vision, hearing, touch, smell, and taste to collectively serve emotional healing.

Visually, we've abandoned bright, eye-straining colors in favor of natural tones like earthy hues and raw wood shades. We've paired these with dynamic light and shadow changes—such as installing semi-transparent sandblasted glass above the hot spring pool, allowing sunlight to filter through and create soft light spots during the day, while warm yellow ground lights outline the pool's edges at night, avoiding the oppressive feel of bright lights. Audibly, we've replaced artificial music with natural soundscapes, like the babbling of streams and the rustling of bamboo forests, even setting up rainwater collection devices in specific areas to let the sound of rain become a natural white noise. Tactilely, the pool's bottom is lined with fine diatomaceous earth, and the edges are rounded volcanic rock to avoid the discomfort of cold, hard materials. As for the senses of smell and taste, we incorporate local elements, such as adding mugwort and osmanthus flowers to the hot spring pool and providing customized tea snacks in the resting area, creating a sensory experience that encapsulates visitors' emotions in a comprehensive way.

Rule Two: Precise Segmentation, Aligning with Diverse Emotional Needs

Visitors have varying emotional needs: some seek solitude for contemplation, others yearn for family companionship, and still others are after social sharing. Therefore, in our spatial planning, we implement "emotional zones" to ensure each group finds their exclusive comfortable space.

In response to the demand for "solitary healing," we have designed the "Zenlike Quiet Spa Area," featuring a full or semi-enclosed space layout, accompanied by meditation cushions, scenic windows, and even an "emotional release wall" where visitors can write down their troubles and seal them away. For the need for "family companionship," we have created the "Parent-Child Interactive Spa Area," where the pool is designed as a shallow water zone, surrounded by sand pits, mini slides, and light entertainment facilities. Greenery is also used to form a natural barrier, ensuring the privacy of family activities. To cater to the demand for "social sharing," we have planned the "Starry Sky Shared Spa Area," adopting an open layout, with trendy photo spots and rest bars, meeting the social needs of young people to take pictures and share. This precise design allows the spa space to accommodate different emotional needs simultaneously, enhancing satisfaction across the entire customer base.

Rule Three: Empowering with Technology, Making Emotional Experiences More Precise and Agile

The value of technology lies not in dazzling effects, but in providing more precise and agile emotional experiences. The technological elements we incorporate into our designs are always "invisible assistants" serving the purpose of emotional healing.

For select high-end hot spring projects, we've introduced the "Intelligent Temperature Control and Emotional Interaction System": By capturing environmental and visitor body temperature data through sensors, the system automatically adjusts the hot spring water temperature, while also switching corresponding lighting colors and soundscapes with different water temperatures—cool-toned lighting and crisp bird chirps for the low-temperature invigorating bath area, and warm-toned lighting with deep cello music for the high-temperature soothing bath area. In the AR guide system, we've integrated local cultural stories, allowing visitors to scan a code to unlock the historical legends behind the hot springs, elevating the bath experience from "physical relaxation" to "spiritual nourishment." Furthermore, we've even tried introducing "biological feedback chairs" in the resting area, which monitor visitor heart rate and breathing data to recommend tailored healing programs, making emotional healing more scientific.

A good hot spring design is an "gentle vessel" for emotions.

From the master collaboration design at Switzerland's 7132 Spa Hotel to the natural symbiotic aesthetics of the Blue Lagoon Spa in Iceland, and to an increasing number of domestic projects focusing on emotional experiences, the industry's development trends have long proven: the core of spa design lies in respecting the human experience and attending to emotions.

As practitioners of hot spring design, we firmly believe that a great hot spring space is not merely a collection of cold buildings and facilities, but a "gentle container" that embraces fatigue and nurtures the soul. In the future, we will continue to focus on "emotional value," blending nature, culture, and technology to create more heartwarming hot spring masterpieces, ensuring every visitor finds their own relaxation and healing here.
