The recycling and circular use of e-waste brings numerous environmental and social benefits, such as reducing demand for new products and raw materials; conserving water and electricity resources needed for production; lowering costs for packaging; making resource distribution in society more equitable; and reducing the use of landfills.Some audio-visual products, such as televisions, videotapes, cassettes, and certain handheld devices and computer components, contain valuable but harmful components that are subject to recall, including lead, copper, and gold.
Data released by an international e-waste management project on the 15th shows that the amount of discarded electronic products and appliances worldwide may increase by 30% within five years, posing a significant challenge for electronic waste classification and recycling. This project, named the "Initiative to Solve the E-Waste Problem," is a collaborative effort initiated by relevant UN agencies, civil organizations, and electronic industry groups. The report released by the project predicts that by the end of 2017, the global annual disposal of appliances and electronic products such as refrigerators, TVs, mobile phones, electronic toys, computers, and monitors will reach 65.4 million tons, a 30% increase from 2012.
