Do Stainless Steel Cabinets Really Never Rust?

    2025-08-18

Stainless Steel EnclosureWidely used in equipment and production facilities for food, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, water treatment, and more, it offers excellent protection for components inside the cabinet and the process environment in harsh conditions.Stainless Steel EnclosuresIs It Really Rust-Proof? Let's Dive into the Principles of Stainless Steel Stainless steel, a material with a history of less than a century since its inception, is widely used today. It refers to steel that resists corrosion from weak corrosive mediums like air, steam, and water, as well as chemical侵蚀 agents like acids, alkalis, and salts. Its corrosion resistance is achieved by adding chromium to the alloy, which forms a thin oxide layer on the surface of the stainless steel. This layer prevents the underlying steel from rusting when it comes into contact with oxygen or water. Next, let's examine the two main elements that lead to steel corrosion and rust: water and oxygen. The main drawback of steel is that its iron content is prone to corrosion. When exposed to water and oxygen, iron oxidizes to form iron oxide and ferric oxide. When combined with water, these oxides create the "rust" commonly referred to.

Another type is "flash rust," which occurs when water-based liquids adhere to metal materials. Due to the instantaneous strong electrochemical reaction between the high-concentration electrolytic solution and the metal substrate, metal ions undergo corrosion under the oxidation of oxygen. Similar to the principle of metal corrosion, this type of corrosion happens quickly and over a short period, with the metal surface showing distinct rusting, hence the name "flash rust." The three essential elements for the formation of flash rust are the metal substrate, water, and oxygen.

During the production and transportation of stainless steel, electrochemical corrosion may also occur.

When mechanical damage occurs on the surface of stainless steel, which is an inevitable occurrence, the protective oxide layer may be lost, exposing it to the air.

Stainless steel requires separate processing and storage areas. If other metal particles are present in the processing environment and adhere to the surface, electrochemical corrosion may occur, leading to rust on the stainless steel.

Defects during the welding process can lead to premature oxidation at the weld joints, which often results in the welds and weld points being the parts subject to corrosion in high anti-corrosion environments.

How can you prevent stainless steel cabinets from rusting or developing "flash rust"?

Surface Treatment. This is one of the distinctions between stainless steel and ordinary carbon steel quality. We often say that stainless steel parameters include 100 grit, 200 grit, 400 grit, etc., which actually refers to the surface texture grade of stainless steel. The higher the grit number, the higher the texture grade and the smoother the surface. Extremely rough cabinet surfaces and dents can cause misty saltwater or chemicals to accumulate on them. However, cabinets with a textured surface are relatively smooth, making it difficult for various substances to gather on the surface and rust.

Second: Regular Cleaning. As mentioned earlier, the cabinet surface is smooth, making it more difficult for metal and chemical particles to adhere. However, the surface polishing process is complex and expensive. A simple alternative is to regularly clean the surface, using appropriate cleaning agents as needed, which can effectively prevent various forms of corrosion and also remove temporary flash rust that may form.

Thirdly, the exterior of the cabinet is painted. If the application environment of the cabinet is too harsh, corrosion may still occur. WAGO offers two painting solutions: one is to apply a transparent varnish to the surface of the stainless steel cabinet, preserving the appearance of the stainless steel; the other is to spray a high-quality powder coating on the surface of the stainless steel cabinet, with a choice of different powder colors.
