The twin-screw extruder, although structurally similar to the single-screw extruder, differs significantly in its working principle. In a single-screw extruder, the driving force for material advancement primarily relies on the difference in friction coefficients between the material, barrel, and screw. If the friction coefficient between the material and the inner wall of the barrel is too low, the material will grip the screw and rotate with it when the screw turns, preventing the threads from propelling the material forward. However, in a twin-screw extruder, the two screws interlock. At the interlocking point, one screw's threads fit into the grooves of the other, creating separate C-shaped chambers. As the screws rotate, the C-shaped chambers move axially with the movement of the interlocking section. Each revolution of the screw advances the C-shaped chamber by one pitch, and the material within these chambers is propelled forward by the thrust of the interlocking threads, counteracting the tendency to rotate with the screw. This ensures a smooth material advancement without backflow or stagnation, thus providing a strong forced conveying characteristic.
The twin-screw extruder's unique characteristic of short and uniform material residence time within the twin screws, which prevents localized degradation and spoilage, offers distinct advantages in processing heat-sensitive plastics like PVC, which are prone to thermal decomposition, curing, or agglomeration when exposed to prolonged material residence times. This is particularly beneficial for coloring, blending, and product manufacturing processes of PVC materials. Due to the excellent mixing and plasticizing capabilities of twin-screw extruders, they are primarily used for polymer modification operations such as blending, filling, and reinforced extrusion. They can also directly extrude products like sheets, pipes, and profiles.
The twin-screw extruder has a broad range of applications, suitable for processing various materials, and can achieve high output, quality, and efficiency. Despite its complex structure, it has gained widespread attention and rapid development. In recent years, with the development of new fields, products, and technologies such as synthetic materials and fine chemicals, the increasing number of special or unique polymer types that need to be processed has led to a growing demand for twin-screw extruders. Currently, the global trend in twin-screw extruders is towards higher torque, higher speed, and lower energy consumption.
