Yesterday, the U.S. and China released a joint statement on the Geneva Economic and Trade Talks, announcing a general reduction in U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods, which could mark a turning point for the lithium battery industry's exports to the U.S.

Based on this statement, the current import tariffs on automotive lithium batteries from China to the United States have been reduced to 58.4%, while non-automotive lithium battery tariffs have dropped to approximately 41%.

U.S. lithium-ion battery products are subject to a 3.4% basic tariff. In August 2024, the U.S. imposed an additional 25% tariff on automotive lithium-ion batteries imported from China.Prior to the joint statement announcement, the cumulative import tariffs on Chinese automotive lithium batteries, based on the 145% tariff announced by the White House on April 10th, reached 173.4%, while the tariffs on non-automotive lithium batteries were approximately 156%.

Briefly Recap the Tariff Process on Chinese Lithium Batteries in the U.S.

May 14, 2024: The U.S. has announced higher tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles and lithium batteries, with the lithium battery tariff rate increasing from 7.5% to 25%.

September 2024: The U.S. officially implements the Section 301 Tariff Act, imposing high tariffs on Chinese imports such as lithium batteries and electric vehicles. The tariff on power batteries has been increased from 7.5% to 25%, with the planned increase of energy storage battery tariffs to 25% by 2026.

February 1, 2025: President Trump signed an executive order to impose a 10% tariff on goods imported from China.

March 4, 2025:The U.S. has imposed an additional 10% tariff on goods imported from China, while the existing 3.4% base tariff remains in effect. As a result, the comprehensive tariff on lithium batteries exported from China to the U.S. now stands at 48.4%.

April 9, 2025: The U.S. imposed a 34% tariff on all goods exported from China to the U.S. under the pretext of "reciprocal tariffs." This addition to the previously imposed 20% tariff, 3.4% basic tariff, and 25% Section 301 tariff, brought the cumulative tariff rate on China's exported power lithium batteries to the U.S. to as high as 82.4%.

May 12, 2025: China and the United States release a joint statement on the Geneva Economic and Trade Talks.U.S. Tariffs on China Reduced: Automotive Lithium-ion Battery Tariffs Cut to 58.4%, Non-automotive Lithium-ion Battery Tariffs Decline to Approximately 41%
