Stage wooden flooring

Stage wooden flooring must meet the following three performance aspects in terms of functionality.

(1) The performance (sports) function should meet the requirements of various performances, especially those with high physical demands like dance and acrobatics. It should minimize the energy expenditure of performers and maximize their acting skills. Therefore, the floor should have adequate elasticity, with vibration deformation and movement deformation as indicators to demonstrate this sports performance. Of course, wooden floors inherently possess excellent elasticity.

(2) Safety Features

To prevent injuries during actors' movements on stage, the flooring must have a certain vibration absorption rate. It should adequately absorb the impact forces during jumps and landings, reduce muscle fatigue, and protect the joints and ligaments of the legs and feet, thereby minimizing common ankle injuries seen in stage performances. Additionally, the flooring surface must have an appropriate coefficient of friction; both too slippery and too abrasive surfaces are prone to slips, which can increase the load on the legs, leading to fatigue and potential injuries.

Technical Features

The stage wooden floor must meet the load-bearing capacity and stability requirements for various performances. With a large amount of scenery, props, and equipment being transported on stage, they all demand specific load-bearing capabilities from the wooden floor. The rolling load is a specific indicator of this performance. The requirements for the floor during performances (mainly referring to actions with high movement) are similar to those for athletes during basketball games. We can refer to the relevant standards for sports wooden floors. Currently, the International Sports Floor Technical Committee (OZST) quantifies technical specifications, adopting provisions from the German DIN 18032 standard, and provides detailed technical requirements for sports wooden floors. In China, sports wooden floors also adopt this standard. It is divided into 5 parts. It is worth noting that, although similar, specific indicators may still differ. As to how much is suitable for stages, this awaits experimental and exploratory research by relevant experts.
