UL Introduces

UL is an abbreviation for Underwriters Laboratories Inc. It is a prestigious and one of the largest independent, non-profit organizations in the United States and the world, specializing in safety testing and certification. It conducts scientific tests to determine the safety and potential hazards of various materials, devices, products, equipment, and buildings. It establishes, writes, and distributes relevant standards and materials to help reduce and prevent losses to life and property, while also engaging in field research. In summary, it primarily focuses on product safety testing and certification services, aiming to contribute to the market's access to goods with high safety standards and to ensure personal and property safety. As a means to eliminate technical barriers in international trade, UL plays a positive role in promoting the development of international trade.

UL, established in 1894, initially relied on funding from its fire insurance division to operate until it became fully autonomous in 1916. Over nearly a century of growth, UL has become a globally recognized testing institution, boasting a comprehensive organizational management system, standard development, and product testing procedures. Managed by a board of directors composed of representatives from safety experts, officials, consumers, the educational sector, utilities, insurance, and standards departments, UL's day-to-day operations are handled by the President and Vice President. Currently, UL has five laboratories in the United States, with headquarters in the Northbrook town of Chicago's northern suburbs, and has also established corresponding laboratories on the Chinese mainland, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.

Battery UL Certification

Battery products must undergo UL certification before entering the U.S. market. While UL certification is voluntary, U.S. Customs allows goods with the "UL" mark to pass through without complications, whereas those without it require a complex inspection process. Moreover, in the event of safety incidents, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) uses UL standards as a basis for judgment. Therefore, many sellers in the U.S. opt to avoid trouble and refuse to sell products without the "UL" mark. Batteries, as components of electrical products, entering the U.S. market require UL certification.

Battery UL Certification Product Range

Lithium Batteries (Units), Backup Batteries (Units), Residential and Commercial Batteries (Units)

Battery UL Certification Test Standards

UL 1642 Lithium-ion (Battery) Pack Standard

UL2054 Residential and Commercial Batteries (Units)

Note:

UL 1642 is a safety specification standard for lithium batteries, first released by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (also known as UL), in October 1985. It is a globally recognized authority on evaluating the safety and reliability of lithium batteries under various fault conditions, particularly focusing on the cells.

UL2054 primarily targets lithium-ion battery packs. It applies to batteries used as power sources in products, including primary (non-rechargeable) and secondary (rechargeable) batteries. These batteries can be composed of a single electrochemical cell or a series or parallel combination of two or more lithium-ion batteries that convert chemical energy into electrical energy through a chemical reaction.

Battery UL Certification Application Documents

UL2054 certification requires the submission of the following documents, provided that the battery cell has already obtained UL1642 certification.

Battery and Cell Specifications Document

2. Specifications and information for key battery components (such as MOS, IC, PTC, NTC, PCM, protective devices, etc.)

3. UL1642 certified battery cell documentation

4. Insulating components such as plastic shells, tapes, wires, and PCBs must have UL certification.

02  The following documents are required for UL 1642 certification:

Battery cell qualification certificates, cathode and anode material specifications, electrolyte specifications, separator specifications, and specifications for aluminum-plastic film or aluminum shell.

Lithium-ion Battery UL Certification Testing Program

Test Project: Short Circuit Test (BE-1000A or BE-1000W)

Test Conditions: Battery short-circuited at positive and negative terminals using a wire with less than 100 milliohms resistance under full charge, at room temperature and 60℃±2℃.

Battery testing requirements: No explosion, no fire.

Battery Test Results: No explosion or fire occurred. There was a leakage of electrolyte.

02 Test Project: Overcharge Test

Testing Conditions: The battery is charged under full charge condition at a constant current and voltage of 3C, 10V. Charging is maintained until the current reaches 100mA, at which point it switches to constant voltage charging for 48 hours.

Experiment Requirement: Battery must not explode or catch fire.

Battery Test Reaction: Battery swollen, with liquid leakage. No explosion, no fire.

Test Project: Compression Test (BE-6045 Battery Compression Tester)

Test Conditions: Under full charge, a force of 13kN is applied to the two pistons on the side of the battery, with a diameter of 32mm, until the pressure on the pistons reaches 17.2MP.

Battery testing requirements: No fire, no explosion.

Battery Test Reaction: The battery suffered severe deformation, with the battery temperature rising to 147℃. There was no explosion or fire, but electrolyte leakage occurred.

Test Project: Thermal Shock Test (BE-101 Series Thermal Shock Test Chamber)

Test Conditions: At full charge, the temperature in the high-temperature chamber increases by 5°C per minute, reaching 150°C and then maintaining for 10 minutes.

Experiment Requirement: No Battery Explosion or Fire

Battery Experiment Results: A total of 15 batteries were tested, including 10 (10Ah) and 5 (7.5Ah), with no reaction from any of the batteries. According to the test engineer, it is difficult for many manufacturers' batteries, whether small or large capacity, to pass this test, and the experiment poses certain risks.

Test Project: Impact Test (BE-5066 Battery Impact Tester)

Test Conditions: Under full charge, a steel rod with a diameter of 15.8mm is placed on the battery, and a 9.1kg object is dropped freely onto the rod from a height of 61cm above the battery.

Experimental Requirement: Battery must not explode or catch fire.

Battery Test Reaction: The batteries deformed, with their flat surfaces becoming concave. The battery temperature began to rise; two out of fifteen batteries reached 124°C, but there was no explosion or fire. The remaining batteries had temperatures ranging from 35°C to 82°C.
