Structural steel engineering drawings are typically provided by architectural design institutes, but they cannot be used directly for steel fabrication. After considering factors such as tolerance requirements, machining allowances, and welding control in the steel fabrication process, detailed fabrication drawings are drawn based on the original design. This step is also referred to as "drawing refinement."

It is a set of instructions for various operations including actual dimensions, marking, cutting, beveling, drilling, bending, assembly, welding, painting, product inspection, stacking, and shipping, providing constraints and guidance. When drawing detailed plans or reviewing design drawings during the steel structure processing, it is essential to analyze and study the construction conditions or complexity while reviewing. One must carefully assess the difficulty of welding parts, consider the use of high-strength bolts and fastening tools, and ensure the welding angle of the welding rod can be maintained in confined spaces. It's widely known that during the steel structure welding process, the steel will deform when heated, leading to weld shrinkage and distortion. Therefore, how to make holes during the manufacturing process greatly affects product quality. Particularly when installing steel columns and beams, the dimensional accuracy of the holes at the site of connection directly impacts the progress and quality of the steel structure installation. Thus, mastering the hole-making technique is crucial, and it generally falls into four scenarios:

Pre-drill hole positions during steel structure processing, and then mark and confirm for drilling after assembly, welding, and deformation correction are completed.

In the steel component, the drilling process is performed at one end after assembly, welding, and deformation correction are completed, and then the drilling is done at the other end.

After steel component welding and deformation correction, the end face is finely processed, and then the fine processing surface is used as the baseline for marking and drilling.

During steel component marking, fully consider welding shrinkage, deformation allowance, and permissible tolerances before directly drilling holes. Common mechanical drilling methods include electric drills, air drills, vertical lathes, cantilever drills, truss-type cantilever drills, multi-axis drills, and NC drilling machines. After drilling, use a polishing machine to remove burrs around the holes to maintain the smoothness and precision of the holes.
