Grate cleaning machines are typically installed at the beginning of the treatment process or at the intake of pump stations, located at critical points. To ensure safety, a backup unit or other methods must be in place to allow for maintenance of the grates without interrupting the water supply. To maintain power equipment, mechanical grates are usually housed in well-ventilated grated rooms. Large and medium-sized grated rooms should be equipped with hoisting equipment for easy maintenance of the equipment and daily removal of the grates.

The approach to the格栅cleaning machine should maintain a straight pipe section of 5m or more, with the water flow velocity within the approach ranging from 0.4 to 0.9m/s, and the velocity passing through the bars from 0.6 to 1.0m/s. The transition between the approach for placing the格栅 and the approach before the格栅 should have an expansion angle less than 20°. The head loss of water passing through the格栅 is generally 0.08 to 0.15m, thus, the approach after the格栅 should be reduced by 0.08 to 0.15m compared to the approach before the格栅.

The upper grid must be equipped with a roof working channel, which should be at least 0.5m higher than the highest planned water level in front of the grid. The working platform should be fitted with safety equipment such as railings and flushing equipment. The passage on both sides of the channels should be no less than 0.7m, the width of the front passage should not be less than 1.2m during manual waste removal, and not less than 1.5m during mechanical waste removal.
