Water softening equipment is designed to reduce water hardness, primarily by removing calcium and magnesium ions. In layman's terms, it's a device that decreases water hardness, and its main functions include removing calcium and magnesium ions, activating water quality, sterilizing and algae control, and preventing and removing scale. During the water softening process, the total salt content in the water does not decrease. It is widely used in hot water boiler systems, heat exchange systems, industrial cooling systems, central air conditioning systems, and other water-using equipment systems.
We typically express the content of calcium and magnesium ions in water using the "hardness" indicator. One degree of hardness is equivalent to 10 milligrams of calcium oxide per liter of water. Water with a hardness below 8 degrees is called soft water, while water above 17 degrees is considered hard water. Water with a hardness between 8 and 17 degrees is termed moderately hard water. Rainwater, snowmelt, and water from rivers, lakes, and streams are all soft water, while spring water, deep well water, and seawater are hard water. Softened water refers to water that has had its hardness (mainly calcium and magnesium ions) removed or reduced to some extent. During the softening process, the hardness of the water is reduced, but the total salt content remains unchanged.
Soft Water Treatment Methods:
Ion Exchange Method: Utilizing strong acid cation resin to replace calcium and magnesium ions from raw water, the boiler feed water filtered by this softening water equipment becomes low in hardness, suitable for boiler softened water. Due to the high solubility of sodium salts, scaling formation is avoided as the temperature rises.
1.1 Features and Effects: Stable and accurate performance, mature technology. Can reduce hardness to zero.
Scope of Application: Currently commonly used standard methods in the fields of catering, food, chemicals, as well as applications such as air conditioning and industrial circulating water.
②. Scale Inhibitor Method: The scale inhibitor added to the water can alter the characteristic of calcium and magnesium ions binding with bicarbonate ions, thereby preventing scale from precipitating and settling.
2.1 Features and Effects: Low initial investment, wide adaptability. Operating costs are biased low when water softness is high.
2.2 Scope of Application: Due to the addition of chemicals, the application of water is greatly restricted, generally not suitable for drinking, food processing, industrial production, and other areas. It is also rarely used in civil applications.
The Role of Soft Water Treatment
The use of the soft water equipment has saved a considerable amount of wasted fuel.
When scale forms on a boiler, for a boiler operating at a pressure of 1.4MPa, 1mm of scale can form, resulting in a 8% fuel waste.
2. Softening water equipment boosts thermal efficiency and reduces output.
When scale builds up on the boiler's evaporative surface, heat from the fire side cannot quickly transfer to the water side, thereby reducing the boiler's output. If improper water treatment causes scaling in the boiler, reducing its evaporation capacity by one-third, the automatic production line will not be able to operate due to insufficient gas supply.
The use of soft water equipment reduces the frequency of boiler maintenance.
Scale buildup on boiler plates or pipes is extremely difficult to remove, especially when it leads to leaks, cracks, fractures, deformation, and corrosion in the boiler. Not only does it damage the boiler, but it also consumes a substantial amount of manpower and resources for maintenance, which not only shortens the operating time but also increases maintenance costs.
4. The application of soft water equipment reduces safety hazards.
Boiler accidents caused by scale account for over 20% of the total, resulting not only in equipment losses but also posing threats to personal safety. The infrastructure and operational costs for water treatment make up a quarter of all savings expenses.
Section 3: Different applications require different soft water treatment equipment.
1. The scope of application for water softening equipment:
① Heating ② Cooling补水 (Cooling water replenishment) ③ Process ④ Steam boiler ⑤ Iron and steel smelting ⑥ Chemical industry
How to Select a Softening Water Equipment
Controller: Available in automatic and manual control. Brand selection includes both imported and domestic options.
② Resin Tank: The tank materials for water softening units are divided into glass fiber, carbon steel, and stainless steel.
③ Equipment Control Forms: One type automatically resets when the water volume reaches the set value, known as flow-type; suitable for all water supply system softening treatment equipment. The other type controls the regeneration dosage by time, known as time-type; suitable for water supply systems with stable water volume, with a short-term regeneration cycle of 24 hours.
④ Equipment Combination:
Single control, single bed: During the restoration period, water supply will be suspended for 2 hours or continue with the original water (hard water bypass).
Single Control Double Bed: Alternating Water Supply, One in Use, One in Reserve.
Dual Control, Double Beds: Alternating water supply, one in use and one in reserve.
Dual Control, Double Bed: Simultaneous water supply, alternating regeneration.
Multiple Tanks in Series: Using three or more softened water resin tanks in parallel is suitable for large-scale water supply systems.
The softening of makeup water for systems such as steam boilers, hot water boilers, heat exchangers, evaporative condensers, air conditioning, and direct combustion engines. Also suitable for the treatment of domestic water in hotels, restaurants, office buildings, apartments, and homes, as well as for softening water processing in industries such as food, beverages, winemaking, laundry, dyeing, and chemicals.
