High-concentration organic waste water source

High-concentration organic wastewater generally refers to wastewater with a Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) of over 2000 mg/L, commonly produced by industries such as papermaking, leather processing, and food production. These wastewaters contain large amounts of organic matter, including carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and cellulose. Discharging them directly can lead to severe pollution. High-concentration organic wastewater can be categorized into three types based on its nature and source:

(1) High-concentration organic wastewater that is easily biodegradable.

(2) Wastewater containing organic matter that is biodegradable but harmful substances.

(3) High-concentration, non-biodegradable, and harmful organic wastewater.

Characteristics of high-concentration organic wastewater

(1) High organic concentration. The COD is generally above 2000 mg/L, with some reaching several tens of thousands of mg/L. The BOD is relatively low, and many wastewater has poor biodegradability.

(2) Complex components, often containing raw materials, by-products, and various inorganic salts. The wastewater also contains heavy metals and toxic organic compounds.

(3) High chroma, odor. Some wastewater emits a pungent smell. This has an adverse impact on the surrounding environment.

(4) Large quantities of acids, bases, and salts. Typically possess strong acidic or alkaline properties.

High-concentration organic wastewater is harmful.

High concentrations of organic wastewater, due to biodegradable action, can lead to oxygen depletion in receiving waters, resulting in the death of most aquatic life and deterioration of water quality and the environment. Not only does it cause the loss of the water body's usability, but it also severely affects the normal lives of residents near the water body. Additionally, high concentrations of organic wastewater contain a large amount of toxic organic matter, which accumulates and stores in natural environments like water and soil, ultimately entering the human body and posing health risks.
