Shanghai Pudong International Airport, situated in the coastal area of Pudong New District, Shanghai, covers an area of 40 square kilometers. Constructed in 1999, the expansion project was completed and put into use before the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Located approximately 30 kilometers from the city center of Shanghai and 52 kilometers from Hongqiao Airport, it is renowned as one of China's three major international airports, alongside Beijing Capital International Airport and Hong Kong International Airport. In 2014, the airport handled a total of 51.6618 million passenger trips.
On March 29, 2015, an Airbus A320 with the registration number MU2351 arrived at Shanghai Pudong International Airport via the newly opened fourth runway, marking the official commissioning of the runway. It is the first airport in China to have four runways. In fact, Pudong Airport has planned for a total of five parallel runways. Currently, the fifth runway is under construction and will serve as a test flight runway for domestically produced large aircraft. According to information provided by the airport, the fifth runway is located 1,750 meters east of the fourth runway, measuring 3,400 meters in length and 45 meters in width, with a 4E operational rating, capable of accommodating all aircraft except the A380 for takeoffs and landings.
