Gabion netting is an ecological mesh layout. In China, the ecological mesh layout originated from the bamboo baskets over 2,000 years ago. Today, as a new style of ecological mesh layout incorporating new technology, skills, and materials, it has been successfully applied in hydraulic engineering, road, railway projects, and embankment maintenance. It has effectively bridged the organic connection between engineering layout and ecological environment. When compared with some traditional rigid layouts, it has its own advantages, and thus has become a layout type for comprehensive environmental maintenance, including riverbed maintenance, landslide management, prevention of mud and stone flow, and rockfall avoidance. The English term for gabion is "gabion."
The gabion mesh is made by mechanical weaving high corrosion-resistant, high-strength, and ductile low-carbon steel wire, possibly coated with PVC. The diameter of the low-carbon steel wire used complies with ASTM A 975 and EN10223 standards and varies according to engineering design requirements, typically ranging from 2.0 to 4.0 mm. The tensile strength of the wire is not less than 38 kg/m², and the metal coating weight is usually above 245 g/m². The edge line diameter of the gabion mesh panels is usually larger than the wire diameter. The length of the double twisted section must not be less than 50 mm to ensure that the metal and PVC coatings of the twisted wire section are not damaged.
Product Usage Analysis:
This layout is suitable for slope support, foundation pit support, rock face mesh shotcrete on mountains, slope vegetation (aesthetic improvement), and railway and highway barrier nets. It can also be made into boxes and pads, used for erosion protection and maintenance of rivers, embankments, and sea dykes, as well as for net boxes used in reservoir and river diversion.
● Controlling and guiding rivers and floods - The severe disasters caused by rivers include the erosion of riverbanks, leading to numerous floods that result in significant losses of life, property, and soil erosion. Therefore, the use of the ecological mesh layout in addressing these issues has become one of the solutions, as it ensures **permanent maintenance** of riverbeds and riverbanks.
Ecological River Management with Gabion Mesh
The structures in question involve the stability of slopes and riverbeds. Therefore, the use of ecological mesh layouts, which have been the primary method for the reconstruction of many natural rivers and the excavation of artificial channels over the past century, is chosen. It provides effective **protection** for riverbanks or riverbeds, and it also has the function of controlling water flow and preventing water loss, especially in terms of environmental protection and maintaining water quality, it has **significant** effects.
● gabion mesh slope protection / riverbank protection
The ecological mesh layout is a successful model for riverbank protection and slope toe defense, fully utilizing the advantages of the ecological mesh and achieving ambitions that other methods cannot accomplish.
