The electrodes used in pH measurement are also known as primary cells. A primary cell is a system that converts chemical energy into electrical energy. The voltage of this battery is called electromotive force (EMF). This EMF is composed of two half-cells. One half-cell is called the measuring cell, whose potential is related to the specific ion activity; the other half-cell is the reference half-cell, commonly referred to as the reference electrode, which is generally in contact with the measuring solution and connected to the measuring instrument.
