The essence of water-based epoxy floor paint

Regardless of the form of waterborne epoxy resin and waterborne epoxy hardener chosen, a waterborne epoxy system with practical application value is a dispersed multiphase structure composed of waterborne epoxy resin, waterborne epoxy hardener, and water, among other phases. Its film-forming mechanism differs from that of general polymer emulsions, such as acrylic emulsions (condensation film formation, a physical process), and is also not the same as that of solvent-based epoxies. In solvent-based epoxy systems, both the epoxy resin and hardener are dissolved in organic solvents in molecular form, resulting in a homogeneous system. The curing reaction occurs between molecules, thus the curing process is relatively fast, and the cured material is also homogeneous.

Waterborne epoxy is a multiphase system, with the epoxy resin and hardener dispersed in the aqueous phase as a dispersion phase. The cross-linking and curing process occurs through the interpenetration and internal diffusion of particles as water evaporates, thus the curing degree of waterborne epoxy depends on the following four factors:

a) Compatibility: The better the compatibility between waterborne epoxy resin and waterborne epoxy hardener, the more conducive it is for the internal diffusion of hardener particles into epoxy resin particles, facilitating the curing reaction.

b) Particle Size: Smaller particle sizes allow for greater interpenetration of the aqueous epoxy resin and aqueous epoxy hardener dispersed phase particles, resulting in a higher degree of curing.

c) Hydrophilic-Oilophilic Balance: The hydrophilic-oilophilic balance of waterborne epoxy resin and waterborne epoxy hardener is close, achieving a consistent coexistence and stable state in the aqueous phase. If there is a significant difference, the component with stronger hydrophilicity will gradually aggregate in the aqueous phase, leading to separation between the resin phase and the hardener phase.

d) Evenness of Dispersion: In a multiphase separation state, uniform distribution of the resin phase and hardener phase in the aqueous phase can only be achieved through certain mechanical stirring; (Evenness of mixing is crucial for the application of epoxies) — Some friends believe that simply stirring, or not stirring at all, is sufficient to form a film during the use of oil-based epoxies. However, this is a significant misconception. The oil-based epoxies used are dissolved solid epoxies, like 75% E-20, and even without a hardener, a very hard film can form after solvent evaporation. But this film is not cured and cross-linked by the hardener, and it turns into a liquid upon heating, having no performance at all.
