Electric guitars, a type of plucked string instrument, were designed for George Beauchamp and Adolph Rickenbacker. They operate on a different principle than traditional guitars, which do not produce sound through the vibration of a body but rather use electromagnetic principles. The bodies are solid wood, not hollow boxes. Coils are installed on the body, known as pickups. When the magnetized guitar strings vibrate, they cause a change in the magnetic flux in the pickups' coils, producing currents of different frequencies. When these currents pass through an electronic amplifier, they become the sound of the electric guitar.
