Bass is a staple instrument in bands, primarily responsible for the low-end sound and sometimes used for improvisational solos. Traditional jazz typically employs an acoustic bass (also known as the upright bass) to convey its authentic flavor. In modern jazz, especially fusion jazz, electric bass or synthesized bass sounds from electronic synthesizers are often used.
The widespread development and popularity of electronic musical instruments have dramatically changed the concept of a band, with the number of members reduced to typically four. These include rhythm (drums), bass (bass guitar), chords (guitar), and melody (keyboard). The BASS in an electronic band is essentially a bass guitar, officially known as BASS GUITAR. Notation: Use the bass clef and avoid transposing into higher octaves. Appearance: The BASS resembles a typical electric guitar but is slightly heavier, with its notes in the bass register. Consequently, the strings are quite thick and the tension is high, requiring a much stronger picking force than on a guitar.
