    Appropriate Methods for Applying Ultra-Thin Steel Structural Fire Retardant Coating

    The building primarily involves painting, but it can also be sprayed, with a material wastage of 15-30%.
    When painting steel structural components, apply two coats of anti-rust paint, and then coat with NCB steel structural fire retardant paint after drying. The general single coat thickness should not exceed 0.2mm.
    Before each application, ensure the coating is thoroughly mixed. The intervals between coats are based on the coating being non-sticky to the touch, continuing until the desired thickness is achieved.
    During application, due to the evaporation of organic solvents, the work environment should be well-ventilated and kept away from open flames.
    Brush Painting Method: The brush painting method is suitable for coating any shaped objects, and the majority of fire-resistant coatings can be produced using this technique. It easily penetrates the fine pores of metal surfaces, thereby enhancing the adhesion to the metal. Its drawbacks include low production efficiency, high labor intensity, and sometimes brush marks on the coating surface, which can affect the decorative quality of the coating.
    Spraying Method: The application of compressed air and spray gun to atomize the coating ensures uniform coating quality and high production efficiency.
    Some coatings were depleted, and at the same time, the health of the operators was affected due to the evaporation of a large amount of solvents. The spray gun is a key piece of equipment in air spraying. Depending on the paint supply method, spray guns are typically categorized into gravity feed, suction type, and pressure type, and into two sizes based on their spraying capacity. High viscosity coatings require higher pressure and should be fitted with large-bore nozzles; low viscosity coatings need less pressure and can be equipped with smaller-bore nozzles. The air pressure for air spraying generally ranges from 0.3 to 0.6 MPa.
    Generally speaking, if the area is small and the construction environment isn't too poor, it's advisable to use the brushing method to prevent waste of fire-resistant steel structural coatings. For larger areas, construction periods tend to be more stringent, and the construction environment is less favorable for workers, so it's generally recommended to use compressed air and spray guns for misting coatings. Of course, during the application of ultra-thin steel structural fire-resistant coatings, each method has its own advantages, and they can be effectively combined with both of these approaches.
    The Role of Fire Retardant Coatings on Steel Structures in Fire Situations
    1. Minimize the damage to steel structures in fires, preventing difficulties in extinguishing fires and evacuating personnel due to partial collapses of steel structures in fires. The aim of fire-resistant steel structures is to extend the process of steel structures reaching critical temperatures as much as possible, to gain time for fire extinguishing and rescue operations.
    2. Prevent personnel casualties caused by the overall collapse of steel structures in fires.
    3. Reduce post-fire repair costs for steel structures, shorten the recovery period after structural disasters, and minimize indirect economic losses.
    Currently, there are numerous fireproofing methods for steel structures, such as fire-resistant coatings, fire-resistant panels, concrete fireproofing, flexible sheeting fireproofing, refractory steel, and internal water-cooling systems. The selection of fireproofing measures for steel structures should consider the location of the steel structure, the nature of the protective components, the weight and space of the structure after protective measures are applied, the reliability of the protective materials, the difficulty of construction, and economic considerations. Among these, the fire-resistant coating method for steel structures is widely used and highly efficient.
