What Are the Advantages of Epoxy Resin?

Epoxy resins contain various groups and highly reactive epoxy rings, which result in strong adhesion to a wide range of materials such as metals, glass, cement, wood, and plastics, especially those with high surface activity. Additionally, the cohesive strength of the cured epoxy is significant, thereby contributing to its high bonding strength.

(2) During the curing process of epoxy resins, there is essentially no generation of low molecular weight volatiles. The volume shrinkage rate of the adhesive layer is small, approximately 1% to 2%, making it one of the types with low curing shrinkage among thermosetting resins. Addition of fillers can reduce it to below 0.2%. The linear thermal expansion coefficient of the cured epoxy is also low. This results in minimal internal stress and a negligible impact on the bonding strength. Moreover, due to the low creep of the cured epoxy, the adhesive layer exhibits good dimensional stability.

(3) There is a wide variety of epoxy resins, hardeners, and modifiers available. Through clever and well-designed formulae, adhesives can be formulated to possess the desired processing properties (such as rapid curing, room temperature curing, low-temperature curing, water-curing, low viscosity, high viscosity, etc.) and required performance characteristics (such as high-temperature resistance, low-temperature resistance, high strength, high flexibility, resistance to aging, conductive, magnetic, and thermal conductivity, etc.).

(4) Excellent compatibility and reactivity with various organic materials (monomers, resins, rubbers) and inorganic substances (such as fillers), facilitating copolymerization, cross-linking, blending, and filling modifications to enhance the performance of the adhesive layer.

(5) Excellent corrosion and dielectric properties. Resistant to corrosion from a variety of media including acids, alkalis, salts, and solvents. Volume resistivity ranges from 1013 to 1016 Ω·cm, and dielectric strength is between 16 to 35 kV/mm.

(6) General-purpose epoxy resins, hardeners, and additives are widely produced, with large yields. They are easy to mix and can be formed by contact pressure, making them suitable for large-scale applications.
