How Does Calcium Chloride Snow Melting Agent Work?

Calcium chloride de-icing salt, as the name implies, primarily contains calcium chloride. Compared to traditional sodium chloride de-icing salt, it causes much less damage to soil, plants, roads, and buildings after de-icing.

Calcium chloride, due to its exothermic property when dissolved in water, can heat up the surrounding snow when applied for deicing, effectively melting it. Additionally, the solution formed after calcium chloride dissolves in water has a lower freezing point, making it less likely to re-freeze (its freezing point is around -20℃ after dissolving in water or snow), which is beneficial for the drainage of snowmelt. After calcium chloride deicing salt dissolves in water, the ion concentration in the water increases, causing the liquid phase vapor pressure to decrease. However, the vapor pressure of the ice remains unchanged. To achieve equilibrium between the solid and liquid vapor pressures of the ice-water mixture, the ice melts. This principle also explains why calcium chloride deicing salt is less likely to refreeze after use.
