Steel Mills Face Overcapacity: Who Will Be Left Out?

In recent years, China's steel industry has been bustling with activity. A series of major mergers and restructurings have been continuously progressing, giving rise to numerous regional steel groups in a bid to expand and strengthen. Similarly, in the steel distribution sector, some steel traders are facing the challenge of repositioning themselves and transforming their development models. The entire industry is on a path of self-redemption, leveraging its own strengths and enhancing core competitiveness.

However, these major moves have not significantly improved the industry's situation. While steel production companies have been continuously "expanding," they have not achieved "strengthening," with profitability levels continuously declining, even falling into industry-wide losses in this year's fourth quarter. The survival space for steel trading companies is also being eroded, and some steel trading enterprises have begun to try transforming into deep processing of steel and expanding their industrial chains. However, as of now, the results have been minimal. Moreover, not all steel trading companies have the capability to undergo transformation. Those small steel trading companies with insufficient strength are even caught in a dilemma: they have no money to initiate the transformation, yet without it, they have no money to make. In the entire industry's transformation "campaign," they have become mere spectators.
