Carborundum, also known as silicon carbide (SiC), is produced by high-temperature smelting in a resistance furnace from quartz sand, petroleum coke (or coal coke), and wood shavings. Silicon carbide also exists in rare minerals in nature, such as moissanite. In contemporary high-tech refractory materials that are non-oxide, such as carbon, nitrogen, and boron, carborundum is widely used and cost-effective. It is also referred to as refractory sand. Carborundum has four main application areas: functional ceramics, high-grade refractory materials, abrasives, and metallurgical raw materials. Currently, coarse silicon carbide is available in large quantities and is not considered a high-tech product. However, the application of high-tech nanoscale silicon carbide powders is unlikely to achieve economies of scale in the short term.
