What is a Four-Jaw Chuck?

As the demand for higher work efficiency grows, hydraulic collets are gradually replacing manual collets and have gained widespread application. To meet the processing requirements of various workpieces, such as those with irregular shapes like rectangular surfaces and cylindrical blanks, as well as workpieces with eccentric clamping and processing surfaces, four-jaw hydraulic collets are typically used. Across both domestic and international manufacturers of hydraulic collets, the structure of the four-jaw hydraulic collets is driven by a cylinder to simultaneously clamp four jaws, making it difficult for the workpiece center to align with the spindle rotation center. Each adjustment of the clamping center must be achieved through the self-adjusting collet, which is quite inconvenient. Even if adjustments are made with precision, due to the inherent deviation of the workpiece's clamping surface, according to the three-point centering principle, it is still impossible to achieve a four-point circle, and the fourth jaw remains a virtual clamp after the first three jaws are tightened. When cutting forces are high, the clamping force may be insufficient, leading to scrap products or even accidents, which hinders the application of four-jaw hydraulic collets. In response, our factory has developed and produced a four-jaw automatic centering hydraulic collet, which has been successfully applied on a 1.2m CNC vertical lathe. This article focuses on the structure, working principle, adjustment of the jaws, and calculation of clamping force of this collet.

The Four-Jaw Self-Centering Chuck, also known as the Manual Four-Jaw Self-Centering Chuck for Machine Tools, consists of a disk body, four small umbrella teeth, and a set of clamping jaws. The four small umbrella teeth mesh with the disk threads, which feature a flat threaded structure on their backside. The clamping jaws are evenly mounted on the flat threaded surface. When a wrench is used to turn the small umbrella teeth, the disk threads rotate, and the flat threaded structure on their backside causes the clamping jaws to move towards or away from the center simultaneously. Due to the equal pitch of the flat rectangular threads on the disk threads, the movement distance of the four jaws is equal, providing an automatic centering function.

The four-jaw self-centering chuck features two types of jaws: integrated jaws and split jaws. The integrated jaws consist of a base jaw and a top jaw combined into one chuck, with a set containing four positive jaws and four negative jaws. The split jaws, on the other hand, consist of only four jaws, each made up of a base and a top jaw. By changing the top jaw, they can achieve the functions of positive and negative jaws. Additionally, soft jaws can be provided upon customer request, which, after random fitting (grinding), can achieve higher centering accuracy, meeting the clamping requirements.

The four-jaw chuck features a single overall jaw. Each jaw can be moved independently, making it suitable for gripping eccentric parts and irregularly shaped components.
