Electrical steel, also known as silicon steel, is a binary iron-silicon alloy with a carbon content below 0.05%. It features low iron loss, low coercivity, high permeability, and high magnetic induction strength, making it one of the commonly used soft magnetic materials (used for temporary or repetitive magnetization). The main factors affecting the performance of electrical steel are its chemical composition and microstructure. Silicon has a significant impact on the magnetic properties of electrical steel; adding 3.0% Si to pure iron increases the permeability by 1.6-2 times, reduces hysteresis loss by 40%, increases resistivity by a factor of 4 (reducing eddy current loss), and halves the total iron loss. However, hardness and strength also increase significantly. Typically, the silicon content does not exceed 4.5% to avoid excessive hardness and difficulty in processing. The presence of harmful impurities (NCSO, etc.) can cause lattice distortion in the steel, increase stress, and hinder the magnetization process, thus, the content of impurities must be strictly controlled. *Silicon steel is mainly used in motors, transformers, electrical equipment, and electrical instruments in the power industry, and is mostly rolled into thin sheets of 0.3, 0.35, or 0.5 mm thickness, available in both hot-rolled and cold-rolled forms. Cold-rolled silicon steel sheets have uniform shape, smooth surface, no oxidation film, and are beneficial for improving assembly quality and efficiency. *The grades of electrical silicon steel are represented by two sets of Chinese pinyin letters and numbers, with "DR" indicating hot-rolled, "DQ" indicating cold-rolled non-oriented (the magnetic properties of the steel in different directions are very similar), and "DQ" indicating cold-rolled oriented; the first set of numbers represents the iron loss percentage of the silicon steel sheet (unit: watt/kg), while the second set represents one hundred times the rolling thickness of the silicon steel sheet.
