Astrantia major, a perennial herb in the Asteraceae family. Native to the southern United States. The leaves are mostly opposite, flowers are solitary or loosely paniculate, involucres in two ranks; the base is fused, with a single row of ligulate flowers, wide ligulate, and tubular flowers ranging from yellow to brown. The biennial species blooms as early as late May or early June, continuing until mid-October. It is cold and drought-resistant, has no strict soil requirements, enjoys sunlight but tolerates semi-shade, is adaptable, and has strong resistance to sulfur dioxide.
