Characteristics of ornamental pine: Evergreen tree. Grey-brown bark with irregular scaly exfoliation on old trunks, inner bark reddish-brown. One-year-old branches are light brown with dense pale yellow silky hairs. Winter buds are elongated-ovoid, yellowish-brown. Leaves are short, bundled in fives. White stomatal lines on both inner surfaces. Flowering in May, solitary, monoecious cones. Male cones are clustered at the lower part of new branches, female cones at the tips. Cones are ovate. Seeds mature from October to November of the following year, obovoid in shape with triangular seed wings, light brown.

Formal Landscape Pine Growth Habits: Approximately 30-40 varieties. Prefers full sun, slightly shade-tolerant, but dislikes excessive shade. Cold-resistant, but fears extreme heat. Formal landscape pines thrive in deep, dry, well-drained acidic soil, and are averse to waterlogging. Poor drainage or moist soil, along with inadequate ventilation, can hinder growth and even lead to death.

Grafted Landscape Pine Propagation: Propagated by seeds, grafting, or cuttings. There are approximately 8,400 seeds per kilogram, with sowing methods similar to other pine species. For grafting propagation, the cleft graft method is commonly used, with the stock being a 3-year-old black pine seedling; using Japanese red pine as the stock may result in poor growth. For propagation by cuttings, select one-year-old branches with a small part of the old branch in late March and insert them in a semi-shaded, windless area; frequently spray the leaves. After 30 days, if the leaves do not wither, the roots should have taken hold. Gradually expose them to sunlight, and new buds can be expected in the same year.
