How to choose the right generator set for optimal cost-performance?
Many machines have a high starting current, typically 2-3 times the normal operating current, which requires the generator set to be sized at least double, if not triple (for pumps). For instance, a 12kW shredder would need a generator set of 2-2.5 times its power, so a 30kW set would be ideal! However, this sizing is not based on the total load of all machines multiplied by 2-3 times; rather, it primarily considers the loads of the top three machines. This situation assumes manual operation where machines can be started one at a time. For simultaneous startups, a ratio of more than double is required. Of course, as a diesel generator manufacturer, we do not recommend this sizing due to its low cost-effectiveness. We suggest sizing based on specific circumstances, starting machines individually, and then calculating the required kW for the generator set. For example, if a farm has a total load of 53kW with major loads of 24kW, 12kW, and 7.5kW, and a generator set of more than double the total load (120kW) is needed for simultaneous startup. However, it's not necessary to start them all at once. For instance, after starting the 24kW machine, then the 12kW, and finally the 7.5kW, the remaining load can be started with a generator set of 75kW, which is sufficient. Some may find the calculation complex, but it's straightforward: a 75kW generator set requires 2-3 times the current to start a single machine, which is 48kW, sufficient for startup. Once running normally, the remaining capacity is 51kW, allowing for the startup of the 12kW machine, which requires 24kW, sufficient for startup. After normal operation, the remaining capacity is 39kW, and the 7.5kW machine can be started, requiring 15kW, sufficient for startup. After normal operation, the remaining capacity is 31.5kW, and the total remaining load is 9.5kW, which is also sufficient for startup. Therefore, all electrical equipment can be started, and the calculations are based on a 2x current multiplier. The actual multiplier may vary, and should be determined based on the specific situation.
