Traditional fan flow designs are based on maximum air volume requirements, with adjustment methods using baffles, air gates, recirculation, and on/off motors for control. They do not form a closed-loop control system and do not consider energy-saving concepts.

Understanding fluid mechanics principles, the air volume of a fan is related to its speed and motor power. When the air volume decreases, the fan speed drops, and the motor input power decreases rapidly. For instance, if the air volume falls to 80%, the speed also drops to 80%, and the shaft power decreases to 51% of the rated power; if the air volume decreases to 50%, the shaft power will drop to 20% of the rated power. By using variable-frequency speed control, the input frequency of the fan motor is altered to change the motor and fan speed, achieving the purpose of regulating air flow.
