Challenges of Calibration Aboard Ship

M is based in Singapore and is responsible for the daily business of On Site Alignment in the Asian region. Several years ago, they began using Easy-Laser's equipment. We discussed the specific challenges of aligning rotating machinery on board, which accounts for 95% of On Site Alignment's work in Asia.

What are typical tasks for on-site calibration at shipyards?

Naturally, there are numerous rotating machines on a ship, which can lead to various situations. For instance, we use shaft alignment equipment to align gearboxes and main engines. This is where Easy-Laser comes into play, specifically the XT770 measurement results showing how to adjust the main engine.

When the propeller shaft is removed, we can measure the stern tube's position relative to the engine. We install a laser emitter on the flywheel and extend the centerline of the crankshaft. The detector is placed at the bearing position. Record the values; the measurement program calculates and displays the vertical and horizontal positions.

We offer premium services, yet our work often demands a high level of physical effort, sometimes involving complex crawling in narrow and dirty spaces. Aligning on vessels also presents additional challenges. There are numerous parameters to consider. The boats on water are in motion, with varying loading and ballast conditions. We need to take all these factors into account to calculate the correct alignment target. As we know, intense sunlight affects metal, which, of course, also impacts the measurement process. To minimize this influence, we strive to work during the evening or early morning.

On Site Alignment has been using the XT 770 for several years now. How did you get started?

M— Um, first off, dot lasers are more accurate than line lasers. During our investigation, we also found that Easy-Laser offers more comprehensive support, so the decision wasn't difficult. Everyone who works here must know how to use laser equipment; it's one of our tools, and we'll make the most of it. Sometimes, lasers aren't an option, so we use other more traditional tools for alignment. But I want to say that lasers are our most commonly used tool.

Minimizing downtime is crucial for your customers. What are the advantages of using laser equipment over other tools?

You know, in the harsh conditions we work in, anything can happen. Our clients need things to get back up and running quickly. What if our tools fail? More downtime and disappointed customers. We don't want that. That's why it's important for us to use sturdy and durable equipment, and the XT770 is no exception. Another advantage is the APP, which means the application can still be used on the phone even if the display unit crashes.

Are your clients interested in your laser tools?

They're engineers! They will always be interested in advanced technology. They were impressed with Easy-Laser's products, considering them high-quality tools.

So, from your perspective, it's not impossible to continue using Easy-Laser's laser alignment solution, is it?

We will upgrade to the new XT series at the appropriate time.
