Cherry seedlings have seen a great trend in recent years, thanks to their growing popularity and frequent demand. Many trees on the market are now available, but to purchase a good one, you still need to learn how to choose. Below, we provide you with methods to select beautiful trees.
1. Assess whether it is good
By observing mature leaves, students should not only pay attention to comparing leaves from the same part of the branches but also to the development and maturation of the leaves they observe. For sweet cherry seedlings, it's ideal to select land that is elevated, not prone to flooding, and has low groundwater levels, generally not exceeding 80 cm during the rainy season. On plains, protective forests are located on the southern or northern sides of the village; on sloping lands, choose shallow valleys facing away from the wind. Both types of land can protect against wind damage and ensure sufficient sunlight and heat for sweet cherries in spring, promoting early ripening. For large cherry seedlings, choose neutral to slightly acidic soil for planting; require a deep living soil layer of at least 100 cm; soil type should be loamy sand or loam, with organic matter content above 1%; avoid consecutive planting. When planting cherry seedlings, consider the risk of frost and light conditions. To reduce frost damage, locate the sweet cherry orchard in well-ventilated or elevated areas, such as gentle sloping terraces. Sweet cherries thrive in sunny conditions, so choose open terrain with ample sunlight. Shaded and shaded locations like the northern slopes of hills and mountains are not suitable for sweet cherry orchards.
2. Selecting high-quality seedlings
Recommended height: 150 cm, base thickness above 1 cm, no plastic flow phenomenon in branches, roots, and no tubercle seedlings on roots.
3. Inspect nurseries for frost damage and assess root structure for rot.
When planting in winter, if the density is too high or the planting is too early, the roots are prone to rot, while the roots of normal seedlings are relatively fresh in color.
If the cross-section turns brown, the seedlings will be frozen, resulting in a low survival rate.
4. Inspect seedlings for dehydration
Healthy seedlings exhibit round branches with a green cross-section, feeling soft and cool to the touch. Conversely, seedlings that have lost moisture may have withered branches with a white cross-section, feeling rigid and upright, resulting in a low survival rate.
5. Selecting Appropriate Stock Wood
Appropriate scion wood varieties, which exhibit good grafting compatibility and root stability with the scion varieties, possess strong adaptability to soil resource conditions and climatic characteristics, and can enhance the yield and quality of Chinese cherries.
The quality of large cherry seedlings affects numerous factors and things, including yield rates and harvests that we are aware of. Therefore, our fruit farmers must choose according to the correct methods, and not just for the sake of affordability, as it could impact the economic returns after the harvest.
