Rural residential earthquake civil structures can be categorized based on their seismic resistance levels, ranging from poor to good. In the Wenchuan earthquake, 90% of such structures collapsed. Second, there are brick and stone structures, typically ranging from 6 to 10 stories. Due to the large size and brittle nature of the bricks, they are prone to damage. Third, there are frame structures, particularly those used in commercial outlets, which are large and consist of more than two stories of brick-and-concrete construction. These structures, with materials of different hardness, are top-heavy and have the potential to collapse after an earthquake.

Strong earthquakes are typically frame structures in public buildings of 10 stories or more; better yet are frame-shear wall structures, with the best being pure shear wall structures. A steel structure is robust, applied to passenger terminals, and widely used in earthquake-prone countries like Japan, offering good elasticity to absorb seismic forces but with a high cost.

Currently, high-rise buildings above 30 stories are mostly frame shear wall structures, which performed poorly in the Wenchuan earthquake but showed excellent performance. According to the introduction, shear walls are reinforced concrete structures with high stiffness and strong resistance to horizontal seismic forces. So, don't just look at the height of the building; focus on the key aspects of the building structure.
