The boiler auxiliary air heater is a heat exchanger that uses low-pressure extracted steam from a steam turbine to heat the incoming air of an air preheater. Installed between the outlet of the forced-air blower and the inlet of the air preheater, it is also known as a front-mounted air preheater. Adding an air heater raises the temperature of the air entering the air preheater, increasing the wall temperature of the preheater, thereby preventing low-temperature corrosion. With the air heater in place, the heat transfer temperature difference in the air preheater decreases, causing the flue gas temperature of the boiler to rise, leading to a decrease in boiler thermal efficiency, which is more pronounced than with hot air recirculation. However, the air heater utilizes low-pressure extracted steam from the turbine as its heating source. An increase in the amount of low-pressure extracted steam improves the cycle efficiency of the turbine. Whether the decrease in boiler thermal efficiency can be offset by the increase in turbine efficiency depends on the air heating temperature and the pressure of the extracted steam. Generally, the increase in turbine efficiency does not compensate for the decrease in boiler thermal efficiency, resulting in a decrease in the overall efficiency of the power plant.
