Back-pressure turbine refers to a turbine where the exhaust steam pressure is greater than atmospheric pressure.
Back-pressure steam turbines can be used for heating, drying, sterilization, and other processes. When a back-pressure turbine is used to supply steam to existing medium and low-pressure turbines, replacing the medium and low-pressure boilers of old power plants, it is also known as a preliminary turbine. This not only increases the power generation capacity of the existing power plant but also improves its thermal economy. The design pressure of the exhaust steam from heating back-pressure turbines varies depending on the specific heating purpose; the back pressure of preliminary turbines is usually greater than 5 MPa, depending on the steam parameters of the original unit. After the exhaust steam is utilized in the heating system, it condenses into water, which is then pumped back to the boiler as make-up water. Generally, the condensate from a heating system cannot be fully recovered, and make-up water is required.
